ABOUT SESSION 3
Mat tells us that we need to take action and to keep hope alive even when things look difficult. What is Jesus’ response to Jairus and the lady who touched him? They both receive healing but teach us different things. The ill woman felt she wasn’t worthy, but Jesus calls her ‘daughter’. She is accepted. Being healed, she can then rejoin the community so she receives not only physical healing from Jesus but also her social restoration. Jairus’s daughter is also healed, but Jesus gives Jairus his time as well. The more we spend time with Jesus, the more amazing we find him, and the more we can trust that he will bring miracles along the way.

WAITING
This story talks about Jairus waiting for Jesus to act, and maintaining the faith while he can’t see him moving.
1. How do you feel when you can’t see God moving, or when he feels distant?
2. Do you think sometimes you overlook the fact that he is with you?
3. How can you be more aware of his presence in your life?

CREATIVE PRAYER/REFLECTION

WHY NOT GET HOLD OF A DISPOSABLE SPOON AND PAINT OR DECORATE IT.

In recipes, they shorten the word ‘teaspoon’ to ‘tsp’. We are going to use those letters to help us pray. We have looked at coming to God for more than just asking Him for what we want, so the first prayer is thanking God for who he is or for something he has done. The second is saying sorry for the times we don’t always do the right thing. Only after this do we ask God for something.
Thank you for my friends
Sorry that I wound up my sister
Please help me to trust in you.
Amen.

ABOUT THIS SESSION
In this session we see the disciples once again in a storm. They have seen Jesus miraculously calming a storm (which we looked at in Session 1) - but this time, Jesus isn’t in the boat! What do they do? They had left Jesus on the shore, so clearly they are alone this time. BUT Jesus has a way of being present which they hadn’t even thought possible. He walks out to them on the water. Dez talks about how storms come and go but Jesus is with us - even when we can’t see him. We may not understand his plan but we need to have faith that we are not alone. The disciples have seen Jesus perform miracles at this point, but they are back to being fearful when the next storm comes. Have you ever done that?

QUESTIONS
During this time in lockdown, it has felt like we’re going through a storm. Connecting with Jesus is really important if we don’t just want to follow him, but learn to step out ourselves.
¦ What are the distractions, how can you connect with God differently?
¦ Do you think you can walk on water?
¦ While stepping out will look different for each of us, what does it look like for you?

WHAT IS POSSIBLE? Dez talked about how being close to God helped him feel that he could achieve the impossible. You may have heard the story of Roger Bannister, the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes. Lots of people didn’t believe that it could be done, and yet after he accomplished this it only took one month before others started doing the same. The mental barrier saying it was impossible was broken. For Peter, he saw Jesus performing the miraculous - walking on water - and then decided that he could do it too. And he did!

Questions:
1. What are the things which seem impossible to you at the moment?
2. Who are the people you look up to, and what is it that inspires you to be like them? When we surround ourselves with people who inspire us, we open our minds to God’s idea of ‘possible’. Jesus says, “I tell you for certain that if you have faith in me, you will do the same things that I am doing. You will do even greater things” (John 14:12 CEV).

About video talk 1
Chloe talks to us about three things we can learn from the story:
¦ When the disciples were afraid, they woke Jesus. When we experience fear, is our first response to run to God?
¦ They accused him of not caring. How often do we accuse God of not getting involved when we’re going through tough times?
¦ They are in awe when Jesus calms the storm with three words. They are reminded that God not only can bring comfort, but has power to change situations.

Chloe reminds us to:
Focus on Jesus, not distractions
Remember Jesus is powerful
Trust God

HAVE A GO AT MAKING A STORM OF WORRY LIKE THIS:

STORM OF WORRY

Storm of worry What are the things that make you anxious? Make a Worry Storm together as a family, or create one of your own. Sometimes naming fears can remove some of their power. Write a prayer at the bottom as a reminder that Jesus has power over the storms in our lives.

Session 2: Standing in Faith reliant on Jesus

MEET MIKE THOMAS FROM URBAN SAINTS - HE IS THE NATIONAL MESSAGE BUS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER FOR THE MESSAGE TRUST.

WATCH HIS MESSAGE HERE:

7. Click here

In the previous session we looked at Jesus having power over nature by calming the storm, and in this story that is continued by his power over sea creatures! Mike says when we conquer fears, our lives can be changed. We have probably all been in a place where we’ve tried everything to solve a problem and been at the point of giving up. The good news is that Jesus is in the boat with us - with his help we can achieve amazing things! Just after this story, Jesus calls the disciples to follow him, and they throw down their nets - those things they had been struggling with, and commit their lives to following him. Jesus invites us to do the same.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER
1. Have you ever felt like something was so hard that you wanted to give up?
2. Why did the disciples do what Jesus said, given that they were fishermen and he was a builder? Would you have listened to Jesus in that situation?
3. What do you think Jesus is asking of you and what would it look like for you to do it?
4. Have you been at Spree or anywhere else, decided to follow Jesus and then given up?
5. What is the difference between following someone on social media, and following Jesus for the rest of your life?

CREATIVE RESPONSE
Cut coloured paper into strips, and write on each piece one thing you would like to not give up on. Make a ‘net’ out of the strips and remember that God cares for our concerns. If you have PVA glue or a laminator, you can seal the ‘net’ to make it waterproof, and use it as a coaster.
